TBF Explains Amendment 7 for Bluefin Tuna Management

Bluefin Tuna

The Billfish Foundation has been working diligently to provide anglers, captains, and concerned individuals with more information on Draft Amendment 7 for U.S. bluefin tuna management. Released in Mid-August, the amendment has several proposed alternatives that could significantly impact U.S. anglers including opening current closed zones in the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida East Coast to longline vessels. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is also considering the establishment of additional gear restricted areas in the Gulf of Mexico and off of Cape Hatteras, NC as well as TBF's recommendation of allocating a separate sub-quota of trophy bluefin tuna (greater than 73") for anglers in the Gulf of Mexico. For more details on Amendment 7 and to view TBF's handout that can be used at public hearings, please Click Here.

New Developments in Bermuda's Potential Marine Reserve

Keep Bermuda Fishing

The Billfish Foundation is currently working with many anglers and captains in Bermuda on the potential development of a no-take marine reserve in the waters around Bermuda. Originally gaining the nick-name as the 'Blue Halo' and supported by several environmental groups including PEW, the Bermudian government recently published a consultation document with justifications for the need of a marine reserve and several potential marine reserves of different sizes. Since its release, TBF has been in contact with the department of Sustainable Development emphasizing the need to use scientific justification for creating a no-take marine zone rather than a philosophical basis, something that was not present in the consultation document. Additionally, the consultation document failed to address the economic importance of the charter industry and underestimated the benefits generated by tournament boats fishing for blue marlin in the summer. Is That A Blue Marlin or a Sailfish?

Juvenile Blue MarlinWe all know that blue marlin are one of the largest fish out there, but did you know what they look at like when they are young? Blue marlin, like other fish begin their lives as tiny fish, barely visible on your finger. Recently, several anglers have encountered miniature billfish from South Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico and contacted TBF for verification on what they caught. Surprised, many who thought they caught a "baby" sailfish because of their sailfish-like dorsal fin, actually caught a juvenile blue marlin instead!  TBF explains the large difference between juvenile sailfish and blue marlin.
