TBF Submits Comments for Bluefin Tuna Amendment 7

Bluefin Tuna

The Billfish Foundation would like to inform anglers, captains, and interested individuals that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has extended the comment period for Draft Amendment 7 for bluefin tuna management until January 10th. TBF explains the proposed alternatives within Draft Amendment 7 here. These proposed alternatives could significantly impact U.S. anglers and include opening current closed zones in the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida East Coast to longline vessels. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is also considering the establishment of additional gear restricted areas in the Gulf of Mexico and off of Cape Hatteras, NC as well as TBF's recommendation of allocating a separate sub-quota of trophy bluefin tuna (greater than 73") for anglers in the Gulf of Mexico. Newly elected Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott is taking action to suspend the management plans for the nation’s network of marine reserves that was poised to lock out anglers from more than half a million square miles of ocean. A thorough review of the science behind the planning process for the reserves as well as adequate consultation with stakeholders will be taken in order to restructure the management plans. This time around, important user groups and especially anglers can rejoice knowing that their voices will be recognized, better incorporated into management plans, and hopefully a practical approach to conservation will be taken.
